High-order space-time finite element schemes for acoustic and viscodynamic wave equations with temporal decoupling

چکیده
We revisit a method originally introduced by Werder et al. (in Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Engrg., 190:6685-6708, 2001) for temporally discontinuous Galerkin FEMs applied to a parabolic partial differential equation. In that approach, block systems arise because of the coupling of the spatial systems through inner products of the temporal basis functions. If the spatial finite element space is of dimension D and polynomials of degree r are used in time, the block system has dimension (r + 1)D and is usually regarded as being too large when r > 1. Werder et al. found that the space-time coupling matrices are diagonalizable over [Formula: see text] for r ⩽100, and this means that the time-coupled computations within a time step can actually be decoupled. By using either continuous Galerkin or spectral element methods in space, we apply this DG-in-time methodology, for the first time, to second-order wave equations including elastodynamics with and without Kelvin-Voigt and Maxwell-Zener viscoelasticity. An example set of numerical results is given to demonstrate the favourable effect on error and computational work of the moderately high-order (up to degree 7) temporal and spatio-temporal approximations, and we also touch on an application of this method to an ambitious problem related to the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. Solution of propagation of acoustic-gravity waves in the atmosphere using finite difference method of order two
Investigating waves propagation’s equation in the atmosphere is one of the important and widely used issues in various sciences, which has attracted many researchers. A type of propagating waves is an acoustic-gravity wave. These type of waves have a lot of stationarity properties and can be propagate to a high altitude in the atmosphere. The equation of acoustic-gravity wave propagation is a h...
متن کاملTime-Decoupled High Order Continuous Space-Time Finite Element Schemes for the Heat Equation
In [Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Engrg., 190 (2001), pp. 6685–6708] Werder et al. demonstrated that time discretizations of the heat equation by a temporally discontinuous Galerkin finite element method could be decoupled by diagonalizing the temporal Gram matrices. In this article we propose a companion approach for the heat equation by using a continuous Galerkin time discretization. As a resu...

We describe and evaluate a numerical solution strategy for simulating surface acoustic waves through semiconductor devices with complex geometries. This multi-physics problem is of particular relevance to the design of quantum electronic devices. The mathematical model consists of two coupled partial differential equations for the elastic wave propagation and the electric field, respectively, i...
متن کاملThe new implicit finite difference scheme for two-sided space-time fractional partial differential equation
Fractional order partial differential equations are generalizations of classical partial differential equations. Increasingly, these models are used in applications such as fluid flow, finance and others. In this paper we examine some practical numerical methods to solve a class of initial- boundary value fractional partial differential equations with variable coefficients on a finite domain. S...
متن کاملSolution of Wave Equations Near Seawalls by Finite Element Method
A 2D finite element model for the solution of wave equations is developed. The fluid is considered as incompressible and irrotational. This is a difficult mathematical problem to solve numerically as well as analytically because the condition of the dynamic boundary (Bernoulli’s equation) on the free surface is not fixed and varies with time. The finite element technique is applied to solve non...
